Weezer will release the sixth album in its storied history today with 'Weezer'. The album is one of the most anticipated in the band's history, fueled by the #1 Modern Rock single "Pork and Beans" and its video. The song has held the top spot for 5 consecutive weeks. The single is a song of self empowerment, where people are urged to follow their instincts as exemplified by the lyrics "I'm a do the things that I want to do/I ain't got a thing to prove to you."
The video for the single features a multitude of YouTube stars in a tribute to the cultural phenomenon that YouTube has become and is the top viewed music video on the internet with well over 5 million viewings on YouTube itself. It has been quickly added to rotation on MTV, Vh-1, and Fuse. MTV is further supporting the band by putting them into their 52 Bands in 52 Weeks program where MTV handpicks one band weekly and gives them the equivalent of over 11 hours of on-air promo per week on the channel.
'Weezer', which people are referring to as the "Red Album" to differentiate it from two previous eponymous albums, is a collaborative effort with all band members taking a turn at songwriting and singing lead vocals. In the studio working with Garrett "Jacknife" Lee, Rick Rubin, and themselves as producers the band used a fearless approach to challenge themselves to make the most ambitious album they could. The result is a complete album with a hodgepodge of influences synthesized to make one kick ass album.
"The album is meaty, crunchy and melodic like a good Weezer album should be," says frontman Rivers Cuomo. Cuomo previously described the new songs, which were co-produced by Rick Rubin, as "dark and deep and beautiful," and "definitely more sophisticated and adventurous. You'll hear very long songs ... and non-traditional structures."
The first single "Pork and Beans" is #1 on the Alternative chart. Other tracks include "Everybody Get Dangerous", "Automatic", "Ms. Sweeney", "I'm the Greatest Man That Ever Lived", and "Daydreamer".
biography
Weezer one of the biggest and most influential bands of the last decade will for the third time in its six-album history release a self-titled album. The new album will hit streets on June 24 through DGC/Interscope Records.
To distinguish it from the other eponymous albums its being referred by people as “The Red Album” There are now no more primary colors to describe eponymous Weezer albums having exhausted blue and green previously (to learn more about primary colors go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primary_color). Comprised of sessions produced by Rick Rubin, Jacknife Lee and the band itself, the album is adventurous and undeniable Weezer pop-rock. The first single, the quirky and catchy “Pork and Beans,” was recorded under the watch of the Irishman Lee and will soon be a Weezer classic. The song which will be available to buy digitally on April 22, is already at Modern Rock Radio and a video will be available in early May.
Great albums are culminations of the past with an eye to the future, and the Red Album has parts “Blue Album,” “Pinkerton,” and forges new territory with all four members taking turns singing lead. The “Red Album” is the rarest of modern music combinations: being both immediate and having the quality of growing better upon each subsequent listen. Weezer’s last album, Make Believe spurred the band’s highest charting Top 40 single (#2) in “Beverly Hills,” and had two #1 Modern Rock hits with “Beverly Hills” and “Perfect Situation. That album sold platinum in U.S.
