The Static Age came together in the fall of 2001. Three members of the idealistic side of the punk rock scene and a classically trained pianist...

... , they armed themselves with a handful of memories of what radio used to be like and a desire to write unique songs neither devoid of style nor dominated by it. Taking cues from bands like The Psychedelic Furs, The Smiths, The Chameleons UK, Peter Gabriel, Depeche Mode, Joy Division, and a host of other disparate influences (from The Clash to Nick Drake), The Static Age have succeeded where so many of their peers in the so-called "post-punk revival" (a "movement" with which The Static Age will undoubtedly, but incorrectly, be grouped) have failed: they've developed their own sound -- one that infuses melody, atmosphere, a strong backbeat, and lyrics alternately acerbic and melancholic, and one that manages to sound like nothing before it.

And it's making waves. From their first practice in late 2001 to their new album's release in March, 2005 ("Neon Nights Electric Lives" will be available on The Explosion's imprint Tarantulas Records and Bardic Records), the band has completed a series of (inter)national tours with the likes of AFI, The Explosion, Drowningman, Silent Drive, and many others; self-released a very well-received first album; put out a handful of singles and exclusive EPs on a number of independent labels (including the new single for album track "Amphibian"); worked with producers ranging from Kurt Ballou (of Converge fame) to Matt Squire (who has spent time at the boards working on records by bands like The Explosion, Thrice, Hot Water Music, The Cancer Conspiracy, Northstar, and countless others) and visual artists like Derek Hess; been courted by a number of large indies and major labels alike (which were all turned down in favor of complete creative control and organic growth -- something Tarantulas Records offered); and had features in everything from local zines on up to The Boston Globe.

At the end of its third year, The Static Age shows no signs of slowing down.
