In the ‘80s, Tears For Fears ruled the world of pop. Now Tears For Fears’ most popular album, one of the most significant and memorable of the decade, receives the remastered and expanded treatment with the two-CD Songs From The Big Chair – Deluxe Edition (Mercury/UMe, released May 23, 2006). Issued simultaneously is an expanded version of the homevideo Scenes From The Big Chair, also originally released in 1985, which makes its DVD premiere and tells the story of the album via interviews, documentary footage, music videos and concert performances.

Songs From The Big Chair took America by storm. The second album from Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, the quintuple platinum disc hit #1 on the pop chart and yielded two #1 singles, “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” and the gold “Shout,” as well as the #3 “Head Over Heels” and Top 30 “Mothers Talk.” The album spent a phenomenal 83 weeks on the U.S. chart. Its Deluxe Edition adds 20 selections, including b-sides, rare mixes and alternate versions, to the original eight-song lineup--each recording newly remastered from the original master tapes. Among the bonus highlights are the rare single “The Way You Are” and the U.S. singles for “Mothers Talk” and “I Believe.” The augmented package’s booklet boasts rare photos and liner notes.

Added to the Scenes From The Big Chair DVD as an exclusive bonus is a 35-minute interview with album producer Chris Hughes. The new interview features Hughes sharing “making of” stories not included in the original VHS homevideo. Along with Orzabal, Smith, bandmates and others talking about the recording of their masterwork, Scenes From The Big Chair offers live performances of “Broken,” “Shout,” “The Hurting,” “Everybody Wants To Rule The World,” “Memories Fade” and “The Working Hour” as well as all of the album’s music videos: “Everybody Wants To Rule The World,” “Shout,” “I Believe,” “Head Over Heels,” “Mothers Talk” and “Listen.”

After the grueling world tour that followed, Tears For Fears took a long hiatus before returning in 1989 with the platinum The Seeds Of Love and its major hit, “Sowing The Seeds Of Love.” In 1991, Smith departed for a solo career while Orzabal continued with the Tears For Fears moniker. In 2004, 15 years after their last release, the pair reunited for the acclaimed New Door/UMe album Everybody Loves A Happy Ending.
