Gaucho, a platinum-certified Top 10 album that spawned the Top 10 track "Hey Nineteen," will be released in a special DVD-Audio edition via MCA/UME on March 23, 2004. This album has been remixed in surround sound from the original multi-track tapes by Elliot Scheiner, who received a Grammy for his engineering work on the original 1980 release. The DVD-Audio release of Gaucho features its original artwork with complete lyrics and liner notes.

All of UMG's DVD-Audio releases have been remixed and remastered from the original multi-track masters, taking advantage of the superior Advanced Resolution surround sound and stereo sound quality available with DVD-Audio. UMG DVD-Audio discs will also play on existing DVD-Video players using Dolby Digital surround sound. To learn more about DVD-Audio and UMG releases, visit www.umusic.com/dvda.

For Gaucho, Fagen, Becker and their long-time producer Gary Katz employed their usual all-star lineup of musicians, among them singers Patti Austin, Michael McDonald and Valerie Simpson; guitarists Mark Knopfler, Larry Carlton, Rick Derringer and Steve Khan; horn players Michael and Randy Brecker, David Sanborn and Tom Scott; pianist Joe Sample, and drummers Steve Gadd, Rick Marotta, Jeff Porcaro and Bernard "Pretty" Purdie.

The result was a pop-jazz album worthy of its illustrious predecessor, Aja. One of those who agreed with that assessment was David Breskin, whose 1980 interview with Becker and Fagen for Musician magazine began with this preface:

"Steely Dan has come sauntering out of hibernation with a ravishing new record, Gaucho. It's elegant, it's extravagant; it shows again why Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, the masters of Ellingtonian Backbeat Coolpop-Jazzrock, are the closest thing this generation has to the pre-war sophistication of Porter and Berlin, Rodgers and Hart, Weill and Waller. If Aja convinced Woody Herman to let his big band loose on Steely Dan material... and elevated the taste of the frat-dance college crowd, one wonders what kind of a dent Gaucho might make.

"(The music) is, as may be expected by now, sublime and fragrant and audaciously smooth. Steely Dan Inc.'s revolving door of studio sidemen hasn't stopped swinging yet...rarely have so many done so little spontaneous blowing for so much music that sounds so fresh."
