Todd E. Jones reviews the complete 4th Season of South Park.
“South Park” is a show we all can rely on to cheer us up after a horrible day. Stan, Kyle, Kenny, and of course, Eric Cartman are the 8 year old kids in the fictional Colorado town where everything happens. Comedy Central, as a network, has been pushing the envelope with their creative programming for some time. With other shows like “Reno 911!”, “Tough Crowd”, “Crank Yankers”, and “The Daily Show”, Comedy Central has been leading the way for clever comedy that pushes the boundaries of taste, imagination, and even morality. “South Park” was the start of it all. From their first short film, “The Spirit Of Christmas” where Santa Claus and Jesus were beating each other up, the minds behind “South Park” were doing something different and wonderful. Matt Stone and Trey Parker have tried other shows and movies. The films like Cannibal The Musical, Orgazmo, and Baseketball were never considered good. Even the show “That’s My Bush” got weak a response. They never went wrong with “South Park” though. At first, some dismissed the show and thought it would fade out or people would get sick of it. “South Park” has endured throughout the years and has gotten more intense and crazier with age. Even though Kenny still dies in almost every episode, there is character development. Mr. Garrison finally comes out of the closet. Butters introduces his alter ego, Professor Chaos, to the world. Wendy is getting more possessive of Stan. Comedy Central finally released the complete 4th season on DVD. With 3 discs, the only bonus features include short commentaries on each episode and some Comedy Central quickies from other shows. “South Park” is a show that fans never get sick of. The DVD collection of the 4th season is another beautiful achievement for both Comedy Central and the creators of that quiet redneck mountain town.
The 4th season is a turning point for the show. In the middle of the season, they go into 4th grade. They get a new teacher, Ms. Chokesondick, who has very saggy breasts and a wondering lazy eye. Still, the insanity is something fans love and depend on. There is a hilarious sequence where Mr. Garrison teaches the new 4th Grade teacher how to deal with the children. So, when Cartman says, “Why don’t you suck my balls?”, Ms. Chokesondick confidently can respond, “Present them.” Another imaginative episode is the infamous “Trapper Keeper” episode. Eric Cartman gets engulfed by his Trapper Keeper that wishes to take over the world. The 2001: A Space Odyssey parody is especially astute. Other cool episodes included are “Fingerbang” episode, where the kids form a boy band and the “Fat Camp” episode where Cartman goes to Fat Camp and Kenny gets famous because he will do anything for money. The “N.A.M.B.L.A.” episode is a perfect example of how South Park pushes the envelope. Cartman joins N.A.M.B.L.A. because he wants more mature friends and ends up being the poster boy for the horrible organization. One episode does not even take place in South Park and is dedicated to Pip. Narrated by Malcolm McDowell, Pip (named after the main character in Great Expectations) gets his own episode that is loosely based on the classic novel. There is even a 2-part episode that focuses on Saddam Hussein and Satan’s homosexual love relationship. There is not one episode that will not generate laughs and there are enough episodes to keep the replay value of the DVD set very high.
The social commentary on current events (or events that were current at the time) is also astute and hilarious. In “Trapper Keeper”, the writers explore the presidential election debacle similar to the voting problems Florida. Rosie O’Donnell even has a small part. How can you not love a raunchy cartoon that makes fun of Rosie O’Donnell? Trapper Keeper actually eats Rosie but she makes the monster sick.
The only negative aspect of the DVD set is the lack of bonus features. The few selected commentaries are very short and since it is the 4th season, how many “making of” documentaries can be included?
South Park is a monumental show in television history. It has pushed boundaries, astonished critics, and even legitimized childish toilet humor. Trey Parker and Matt Stone have not succeeded with their movie careers. “Baseketball” and “Orgazmo” do not need second viewings. “South Park” is their element and both of them shine. As a DVD set, “South Park: The Complete 4th Season” can provide hours of groundbreaking humor that has both immaturity and maturity mixed together. For those who are about to make us laugh, we salute you. Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and Comedy Central…. We salute you!
