Born in Oberlin Ohio, grew up in Lorain, Ohio and southern West Virginia. The musical environments of the hard rock midwest and the appalachian musical tradition of west virginia were deeply felt and absorbed by me. The steel mill and ship building town of Lorain, with its violent weather, poor economy, and railroads across it all have gone right into the music. Spent mid 1980's-1990 in various musical projects including metal bands which mainly played in Cleveland Ohio, along side of these projects were the first versions of the material which became Songs: Ohia. Songs: Ohia is named after the Hawaiian Ohia tree.
After a long trek with MAGNOLIA ELECTRIC CO., JASON MOLINA is soldiering on, heading to the southeastern U.S, then Europe to play some solo dates. For those of you who were hoping to see the electric Jason, fear not. MAGNOLIA ELECTRIC CO. will return to Europe in full-band form in late April/May, including a 3-day stop at the DIRTY THREE-curated All Tomorrows Parties festival.
Limited to just 500 copies as a tour-only album back in 2000, the long sought after Protection Spells is now available digitally via Emusic. According to Molina "The Protection Spells is a collection of songs recorded over a period of several Songs: Ohia tours. Presented here are nine entirely improvised pieces. The approach to these songs involved no rehearsals, no second takes, no additions and no going back. What you have here are songs that just happened in real time. The many musicians on these recordings were friends, bandmates and, at times, total strangers."
