Gainesville, Florida five-piece Sister Hazel is planning to release a B-sides disc this summer. “BAM! Volume 1” is scheduled to hit store shelves on June 8th and is the follow-up release to the band’s latest studio album, “Absolutely,” which was released in October 2006. Since everyone in the band writes, there tends to be a lot of music that battles for space on each Sister Hazel CD. The best solution for what is a very good problem to have? “BAM! Volume 1.”
“One day we just said, ‘Let’s build a home for [these songs],’” said the band’s drummer, Mark Trojanowski. “That’s part of the beauty of being an independent artist. When you get fired up about the music, you can just skip the red tape and pull the trigger.”
“One of the hardest parts of making a CD for us has been picking songs,” said the band’s lead singer, Ken Block. “We are a 5-man democracy, and sifting through 70-something songs each time to narrow it down to one-CD-worth of music has always been challenging. Since we all write, there are always a ton of songs that we work up.”
Bassist Jett Beres said: “This is our first hybrid CD. There are full-blown studio tracks, live studio demos that captured our first pure swing at new songs, and some rare bonus tracks.” Rhythm guitarist and vocalist Drew Copeland commented: “When we listened to what we had, we were beyond excited.” Lead guitarist Ryan Newell adds: “To us, there is something special about these songs that has kept us excited about them. These are some of our favorite songs, so we’ve been really motivated to put them out for a while now.”
The band’s fans (known as “Hazelnuts”) and fans of great American rock music will relish this release, which is full of Sister Hazel’s signature soaring vocals, intricate guitar work, a powerful rhythm section and clever lyricism. “BAM! Volume 1” is a shining example of why Sister Hazel is widely recognized as both prolific songwriters and powerful performers, and continues to show why the band is so beloved and so unique.
The band will continue their road warrior ways leading up to and following the release of “BAM! Volume 1” (please check band’s website for a list of confirmed dates). Sister Hazel is: Ken Block (vocals, acoustic guitar), Drew Copeland (vocals, rhythm guitar), Ryan Newell (lead guitar), Jett Beres (bass), Mark Trojanowski (drums).
biography
Humankind creates out of necessity. We are either burning inside to create something new or a problem arises and challenges us to find solutions and to create new inventions. It seems that Sister Hazel has both a burning desire to create and a big problem. Make that a good big problem. Since everyone in the band writes, there tends to be a lot of music that battles for space on each Sister Hazel CD. Enter the band’s latest release – “BAM! Volume 1.”
“One of the hardest parts of making a CD for us has been picking songs,” says the band’s lead singer, Ken Block. “We are a 5-man democracy, and sifting through 70 something songs each time to narrow it down to one CD worth of music has always been challenging. Since we all write, there are always a ton of songs that we work up.”
“I think when we sat down to sketch out this CD, we were done in about 10 minutes,” says rhythm guitarist and vocalist Drew Copeland. “We’ve all been championing these songs for a while now. Not only was it painless, but when we listened to what we had, we were beyond excited.”
The excitement that the band feels about the new CD was only matched by the frustration that they felt in the past when these songs had to wait for another day to shine. “One day we just said, ‘Let’s build a home for them,’” says the band’s enigmatic drummer, Mark Trojanowski. “That’s part of the beauty of being an independent artist. When you get fired up about the music, you can just skip the red tape and pull the trigger.”
Bassist Jett Beres says: “This is our first hybrid CD. There are full-blown studio tracks, live studio demos that captured our first pure swing at new songs, and some rare bonus tracks.” Lead guitarist Ryan Newell adds: “In some cases a demo just feels better than the studio version. Sometimes a studio track doesn’t fit the rest of a record. To us, there is something special about these songs that has kept us excited about them. These are some of our favorite songs, so we’ve been really motivated to put them out for a while now.”
Whether you’re a Hazelnut or just a fan of great American rock music, it’s time to rejoice. This CD has it all - Sister Hazel’s signature soaring vocals, intricate guitar work, a powerful rhythm section and clever lyricism. “BAM! Volume 1” is a shining example of why these guys are widely recognized as both prolific songwriters and powerful performers, and continues to show why this band is so beloved and so unique. It leaves no doubt as to why their music continues to resonate with such a wide audience.
Can you say “BAM! Volume 2”? “That’s a no-brainer,” says Block with a sly smile and a slow nod. “We make music. It’s what we do. And I’m happy to say that there’s a lot more where this came from.”
