You might not know it yet, but in an increasingly middle-of-the-road, manufactured and ultimately male British music scene, you NEED some Robotte love in your life. A bona fide girl band who write their own songs and play their own instruments, these ladies pack a full-on left-field funkpunk electro shock that’s set to spark something of a revolution and at the very least, a bigfat kick up The Man’s ass. Like many great ideas, the germ of Robots In Disguise was born during a drunken night out at a indie karaoke evening at the Retro bar in London.
Dee Plume(guitar and vocals) and Sue Denim (bass and vocals) had been friends since their teens and had half-heartedly tried their hand at various jobs from theatre work to DJing to working at record labels. But when they decided to start writing music together after realising they could both sing, they discovered their true calling and set about creating their Robot empire to try and beat the boys at their own game. As Dee explains: ‘I really just wanted there to be more female performers. That was a huge motivation and I always wanted to be in a girl band. I wanted it to be a real statement. There just aren’t enough girls on stage, playing instruments, being strong. It’s still so very male and about four boys in a band.’ ‘There’s just a massive gap for a proper female band,’ Sue confirms.
Already a hit across Europe, this duo, backed by a changing roster of female drummers, have already built up a huge following in their home country through incendiary soldout live shows despite never having released a record here yet. With a sound that’s The Slits gone disco underpinned by the pure pop sensibility of the likes of Blondie but coupled with the attitude of L7 fronted by Peaches, onstage Robots In Disguise specialise in perfect harmonies and proper tunes while behaving like Iggy Pop and dressing like an updated classic era Roxy Music.
As Sue explains, being onstage is their lifeblood: ‘It’s big deal for us. It’s a way to really connect with our fans. We’re that kind of band, we’re really interactive with our fans and we don’t want to be too far away from them. We like to jump out into the audience, to get everyone dancing, singing along and having a good time and getting a bit out of control.
They’re well on their way to being the latest Myspace stars too with almost 20,000 friends and over 120,000 plays of forthcoming single ‘Turn It Up,’an homage to their musical heroes which name checks everyone from David Bowie to The Smiths. With their unique style, riot grrrl polemic and pile-driven grooves, fans already include Miss Kitten, Tiga, Larry Tee and BP Fallon.
Robots are also long-time friends of cult comedy duo The Mighty Boosh and have just completed a sell-out tour with them, as well as playing characters written especially for them in both series of the TV shows. Lyrics are also especially important to the pair - ‘To us, they’re like poetry,’ says Dee – and that becomes more than evident with their UK debut album ‘Get RID’, beautifully produced by Sneaker Pimp and IAMX producer and frontman Chris Corner. Take the pure disco ooooh-eh ooooh-eh! pleasure of ‘DJ’s Got A Gun’ and listen to the words of “La Nuit” - a fully-realised technicolour description of a sleazy night out in any city in the world. You really could take these girls anywhere. Last word of the manifesto then from Dee: ‘Ultimately, we’re a girl gang. We want other girls to go, Hey! We want to be in a gang like Robots!’ Energy, originality, colour, tunes, double-trouble - the revolution starts here.
The album ‘GET RID’ is released on President Records on July 3
The single ‘ TURN IT UP’ is released on June 5.
The band are currently touring the UK
