With bands like Machine Head, Coal Chamber, Fear factory, Slipknot, Soulfly and Spineshank on their bill, Roadrunner Records is almost a guaranty for success. Every time the label releases a record, you almost know for sure it will become a successful one. One of the most promising bands of this moment is Red Tape. With their Roadrunner debut "Radioactivist", which balances between hardcore, punk and (trash) metal, they seem to make the step to a bigger crowd.

Although "Radioactivist" is Red Tape's debut at a big record label, it isn't their first album. After their EP "Constructivism", which they released under direct management, they recorded their debut album "High Revoltage" in 2000. "High Revoltage" was released by the small hardcore label New Age Records. At that time singer Jeff Jaworski was the only band member who's still in the band nowadays. When bassist Twig von Wussow, drummer JD and guitarist Mark Meraij replaced the other band members, Red Tape was ready for the big deal.

They recorded a five track demo with Amir Derakh (Orgy, Coal Chamber, System Of A Down), which landed on the desk of Mike Glitter, A&R co-operator at Roadrunner. After Mike watched a show of Red Tape at Westcoast Worldwide, he offered the band a record deal. For the recording of "Radioactivist" they worked with Amir Derakh again, which is a strange collaboration when you look at Amir's background as a glammetal guitarist.

"Radioactivist" is one of those records that don't need a lot of listening turns. The fresh punk/hardcore sound, or 'trash-punk' as Jaworski calls it, sounds rough and catchy at the same time. After a short intro, the album burst with the fast track "Damage Control". The song is a heavy mix of solid guitar riffs, rumbling bass and fast drums. When you hear the song for the first time, you have the feeling you already know it for years. Another striking track is the ultra short "High Revoltage". Although the song, which borrowed its name from Red Tape's debut album, is only 46 seconds long, it has got everything in it.

It's almost impossible to name the highlights of the album; the songs are all great. First single "Stalingrad" has the potency of becoming a big hit if it gets enough airplay. One of my personal favourites is "Divebomb", with its fantastic building up and solid break. The catchiest songs on the album are "Strike Tonight" (great break, strange guitar solo and a fantastic climax) and "Shoot! Move! Communicate!", which has to be the next single. If you're looking for the louder songs, you definitely have to listen to "Droppin' Bombs On Your Moms", "Golden" and "Bl'Ast! The System".

Red Tape shows with this album that they're definitely ready for the bigger work. Every punk/hardcore fan should listen to "Radioactivist", because this album has it all. When you've played "Radioactivist" once, you simply can't stop playing it. After the great successes of Roadrunner's metal acts, the label now finally seems to gain some respect within the punk/hardcore scene.
