Over the course of the past two decades, Latin pop sensation, Paulina Rubio has seen success as part of the biggest teen act in her homeland; enjoyed popularity as an actress on the big and small screens; became a best selling Latin pop artist; released a successful crossover album (Border Girl) and has achieved worldwide popularity and success.
Paulina Rubio is back with her much anticipated Spanish album PAU-LATINA; an eclectic fusion of sounds from Latin America such as Reggaeton, Accordions, Spanish guitars, Rancheras, Batucada, Mariachis, Dance, Hip Hop, Rock, Pop and Gypsy rhythms.
The title of Paulina's new album PAU-LATINA honors the nickname that her legions of fans have given her; as well as her Latin roots. The combination of both words, Paulatina also describes someone who knows how to relax and take it easy which is precisely what she did during the creation of this album.
Through her many first hand experiences traveling abroad, Paulina has discovered what she likes to call the beauty of multi ethnicity that is the world today. This world experience gave birth to PAU-LATINA: a fresh, passionate and happy album. "I imagined a happy album, music for night clubs that makes you dance but also something that can be shared with family - with cousins, friends, children and adults," comments Paulina.
The songs on PAU-LATINA reflect strong courageous women without boundaries who fight, love and have fun. Paulina comments, "My music is a mirror of myself. I'm a strong, passionate, positive woman. "I know what I want and how to work hard to make my dreams a reality." I have always been a bit of a rebel and this record is very Paulina (very me). I put my heart and soul into it and am excited to share it with all my amigos.
Paulina has come into her craft full circle with PAU-LATINA. She was very involved in the creative process and co-wrote 2 songs on the album 'My Friend, Mi Amigo' and 'Baila Que Baila.' Paulina also hand picked the writers and composers on the other tracks working very closely with them to make sure her essence was captured in each song.
"I did not choose the songs, they were created inside the studio. We started with nothing, just silence, a concept, a melody, and ideas flowed through the production." Paulina allowed her muse to move her in the music realm and in her creative sessions. PAU-LATINA was recorded in Miami, New York and Los Angeles.
One of Paulina's favorite tracks, 'Ojala," is a song that singer/songwriter Marco Antonio Solis wrote after Paulina pursued him and insisted that her new album had to include a song from one of Mexico's greatest talents. She describes it as the new generation of Hip Hop Rancheras which she began.
'Mia' talks about life, friends, mothers, about the child you may someday have, and about your soul - life and hope."
One of the catchiest tunes on the album, 'Alma en Libertad' which Paulina describes as "a very optimistic way to end someone" was written by Jorge Villamizar from the group Bacilos. Paulina comments on this collaboration, "Jorge is a great friend of mine. We've known each other prior to his professional singing career. I love how he composes. He knows me so well that it seems as if I have written the songs which he composed." Villamizar also composed 'Adiosito Coraz?n' which is one of the most up beat songs on the album.
'Baila que Baila,' which Paulina also co-wrote, is a song that describes how someone should take action when suffering from depression and low self esteem.you have to lift your head up high and move forward, getting out of the routine. On this track, Paulina collaborated with the Chilean rap group "Las Tetas."
PAU-LATINA takes some musical risks and one of the songs that showcases this 'Perros,' produced by Sergio George, who produced Celia Cruz's last album, and written by Villamizar. The song combines Lebanese sounds with reggaeton, rap and hip hop.
PAU-LATINA contains songs by renowned producers and composers such as Emilio Estefan, Chris Rodriguez, Sergio George, Marco Antonio Solis, Marcello Azevedo, Toy Hernandez (Control Machete), Coti and Jorge Villamizar (Bacilos) amongst many others.
Born to one of Mexico's most celebrated film stars, Susana Dosamantes, and raised in Mexico, Los Angeles, and Spain, Paulina's exposure to her mother's trade made a huge impact on the budding artist at a tender age. "My mom was shooting a lot of films in Europe when I was young, so traveling with her around the world, I was exposed to a lot of artists, writers, architects, singers, filmmakers," exclaims Rubio. "It made me very independent, and that is when I started making some of my own decisions, at around 7 or 8."
The first personal decision that set her on the road to fame was to begin training in singing and dancing, which led to her enrollment at a prestigious performing arts school at the age of eight. Within two years, Paulina's talents were so apparent that she was chosen to be part of the popular children's recording group Timbiriche. Though she still balanced her schoolwork with her newfound popularity (good grades were a mandate for staying in the group), she says "the real lessons were recording and performing for ardent audiences throughout Latin America."
After spending nearly a decade as part of the successful group, Paulina decided that the time was right to leave Timbiriche, and few were surprised when her much-anticipated solo debut, La Chica Dorada, spawned three number-one singles and scored platinum sales. In the interim, she has duplicated that triumph with four more smash hit CDs (certified Gold and Platinum) and taken on another challenge, following in her mother's footsteps as a film and television star. "Acting was like a hobby for me," Rubio notes modestly of her hit soap opera roles and her film work, "but music is my priority. I love to perform and spread my music and my messages."
It was her last Spanish album, PAULINA, which made her the reigning international pop sensation she is known the world over today. Since its release in May of 2000 the multi platinum album has spawned 5 #1 hit singles and was named Latin Album of the year by Billboard Magazine, Best Pop album and Female Pop artist by Univision's Premios Lo Nuestro and 3 Latin Grammy nominations in 2001. The album also received 3 platinum certifications in Mexico, Gold and platinum in the U.S., Gold and Platinum in Colombia, Platinum in Chile, Gold in Peru, Ecuador and Venezuela as well as Double Gold in Italy and Spain, where she won Best female artist of 2001 from the prestigious Premios Onda and Amigo awards.
