During the 1995 and 1996 prestigious awards ceremonies for the Academy of Country Music and Country Music Association, Patty Loveless was pronounced country music’s best female vocalist. Finally, the nearly ten years of hard work was beginning to pay off and she was duly recognized as an artist. (In 1995, her album When Fallen Angels Fly was also given the CMA Album of the Year award.) This disc, The Definitive Collection, represents the body of work that earned her those prestigious honors. It chronicles the birth of an outstanding artist with her formidable entry into the country music arena with four cuts from her first album Patty Loveless, and onto her 1988 breakthrough release, If My Heart Had Windows, the title track of which made its way to the Top 10 position (also a hit for George Jones in 1967).
Beginning with that Top 10 track, every cut on this compilation made it at least to the Top 30, many to the Top 10, with several #1’s. This Loveless collection offers the variety of country that Loveless has become known for, such as Steve Earle’s rockabilly “A Little Bit In Love,” the honky tonking “Blue Side Of Town,” Lone Justice’s “Don’t Toss Us Away,” a Buddy Hollyish “Timber, I’m Falling In Love,” a Linda Ronstadtesque “Chains” (with fiddles and steel guitar), a gritty “On Down The Line,” a folky Lucinda Williams’ tale, “The Night’s Too Long,” the spirited “I’m That Kind Of Girl” and the good ol’ two-steppin’ country of “Nobody Loves You Like I Do.”
