Monkey Swallows the Universe - The Bright Carvings

Nat Johnson and Kevin Gori met at Sheffield University and decided to form a band. That band was Monkey Swallows the Universe, named after an episode of cult Japanese tv show 'Monkey'.

MSTU played their first gig in January 2003 with the original four piece rock style line-up including a drummer and a bassist, who both quit promptly after the performance. They didn't play another gig until December 2003 when Nat and Kev were encouraged by some friends to do an acoustic gig. It went pretty well so they stuck at it and have been playing on the acoustic scene in and out of Sheffield ever since.

In 2005 they expanded into a five-piece, with Rob on drums, Cate on violin and Andy on cello. After a trip to 2Fly Studios they were picked up by independent label Thee Sheffield Phonographic Corporation who were keen to release something by the band. MSTU went back into the studio and recorded the rest of what became their debut album 'The Bright Carvings'.
