Picture a cityscape with live music pouring out of loft spaces, fire throwers and DJs, galleries filled with the art of visionaries, rabid all-ages shows and streets teeming with 20,000 revelers at any given time. This is not your everyday U.S. music mecca – this is downtown Phoenix, Arizona on the first Friday of every month. Indeed, there’s a genuine art and music movement rising – dare we say, from the ashes? – in downtown Phoenix. And the main purveyor of this flourishing music scene is Modern Art Records, a new label founded by Chronic Future vocalist/guitarist Ben Collins, his wife Anne-Marie Smart and Chronic Future’s Barry Collins, Brandon Lee and Mike Busse, in partnership with Epic Records.
Modern Art Records shines a spotlight on Phoenix’s music scene while promising a constant stream of new music, collectors’ items and limited releases for insatiable music fans. While this year will see new releases from five bands on the Modern Art Records roster, first up is the pitch-perfect indie pop of Miniature Tigers. The band’s debut on Modern Art Records comes in the form of two separate EPs: Black Magic and White Magic, both to be released on March 4th. Each release will be available digitally through iTunes as well as on limited-edition 12" vinyl.
Frontman Charlie Brand (vocals/guitar), along with Rick Schaier (drums/vocals) and Eli Brandom (guitar) bring together a tightly harmonious, sometimes synthy, playful pop rock sound with influences ranging from The Beatles to the Beach Boys to Weezer. Though Miniature Tigers’ first singles, “Dino Damage” on White Magic and “The Wolf” on Black Magic are perfect representations of their style, every song is a truly original and unique epic. Each piece is arranged with fanciful lyrics filled with Vikings, swashbucklers, gunfighters, cannibals, undersea creatures and dinosaurs that metaphorically describe the sometimes ravenous heartbreak brought on by love and relationships. To the listener, each song is a journey packed with imagination and emotion.
As Miniature Tigers’ introduction to the music world, Black Magic and White Magic are the precursors to a full-length album to be released July 2008. The band is currently in the studio recording the yet-to-be-titled debut LP that will be available both digitally and on CD on Modern Art Records.
