biography
When certain people get a thought stuck in their head, there’s just no shaking it. Meet Louisiana’s own Max Minelli. Rapping since the age most kids were learning long division, Max has literally grown up MCing. Although he would eventually go on to sell over 50,000 copies of his catalogue independently, Max’s road to becoming an underground Southern star was much more humble than most.
Born in New Orleans 27 years ago, Max Minelli recorded his first song at the age of 10. At the time he was living in Southern California with his mother who’s co-worker just happened to own a recording studio. “The first rap I wrote was like a fairy tale,” remembers Max. “I was listening to Ice Cube’s Amerikkkas Most Wanted everyday and he had this song ‘A Gangsta’s Fairytale’ so I wrote one kinda like that.”
In 1991, Max and his mom relocated to Erwinville, LA where Max was suddenly confronted with the fact that he ah absolutely no resources to pursue his new found hobby. “When I moved back to Louisiana it was like damn, I’m never gonna have a chance to do that shit now,” he says. “I moved to this country-ass town with nothing—no kind of hopes or dreams. But I never stopped rapping, that was always my dream.
When he turned 13 Max was introduced to Young Bleed, who at the time was an affiliate of No Limit’s CEO, Master P. Bleed recognized young Max’s potential and brought him to a Baton Rouge entrepreneur named C-Loc who had recently started his own label. Together, C-Loc, Young Bleed and Max Minnelli started a group called the Concentration Camp along with another local rapper J-Von and producer Happy Perez. In 1995 the Camp dropped their first album, C-Loc Presents the Concentration Camp. Max would go on to appear on three more albums in the next five years until C-Loc was incarcerated in 2000.
With the CEO of his label behind bars, Max was left to his own devices. In 2001 he released his first solo album, Me and My Hustle. Following his solo debut, Max started his own label with fellow Campers J-Von and Happy Perez called Crushed Entertainment. “We just took everything we learned from watching what was going on with C-Loc and his label,” says Max. “Happy’s brother was in law school so he showed us how to start a company. We knew where to go to master our songs, where to get our covers made and how to get everything pressed up. We just learned everything else as we went.”
Max released his fifth and most recent album, Get Served in April of ’05 and sold close to 10,000 copies by saturating the Southern markets in Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi. A couple months after Get Served hit stores, Max was told he was being sought out by representatives from various labels including Koch Records who requested a meeting with Minelli in New York City. “They called me trippin’ like, ‘Man, we got to get you up here fast!’” says Max. “I went up there and they were like, tell me your vision. I feel like they believe in me like I believe in myself.”
