Legendary rock icons, Lynyrd Skynyrd, announce a busy and highly-visible month, starting with their nationally televised Super Bowl tailgating party in Jacksonville, Fla;
then heading to Los Angeles to perform on the Grammy Awards show and then releasing a new album, Then And Now Vol II.
Lynyrd Skynyrd will host a kickoff to Super Bowl XXXIX on the eve of the big game. The tailgate party is a special one-hour live concert, “Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Super Bowl Saturday Night Special, airing on CMT, Saturday, February 5th, 2005 at 9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT. For this one-hour hometown show, the Jacksonville natives have invited special guests Jo Dee Messina, multi-platinum band 3 Doors Down, and 38 Special’s Donnie Van Zant to join Skynyrd onstage in performing some of the band’s hits. Additionally, Charlie Daniels will sing his classic anthem, “The South’s Gonna Do It Again,” with Johnny Van Zant.
On February 13th Lynyrd Skynyrd will be the centerpiece of the 47th Annual GRAMMY Awards’ tribute to Southern Rock. During a four-song medley, which opens and closes with Lynyrd Skynyrd songs “Free Bird” and “Sweet Home Alabama,” respectively, other country and southern rock singers will join Skynyrd on stage for two additional songs. The once-in-a-lifetime collaboration features Gretchen Wilson joining the band to duet with Johnny Van Zant on “Free Bird;” Keith Urban, Elvin Bishop and Skynyrd performing “Fooled Around and Fell In Love;” Tim McGraw, Dickie Betts and Skynyrd doing “Ramblin’ Man.”
Just two days after this not-to-be-missed performance, Sanctuary Records will release Then And Now Vol. II on February 15th. The eleven-track album, a follow-up to 2000’s Then And Now, includes a choice mix of both studio and live songs, including such classics as “Gimme Three Steps,” “Call Me The Breeze” and “What’s Your Name,” as well as their most recent classic rock #1 hit, “Red White And Blue.”
Lynyrd Skynyrd began their career in 1973 with the release of their cleverly titled “pronounced leh-nerd skin-nerd.” With more than 25 million albums sold to date, the band has become an American staple and a permanent fixture in rock n’ roll history. In 2003 the band celebrated their 30th anniversary with the release of the studio album, “Vicious Cycle” which was augmented by a successful tour and the release of the DVD “Lynyrd Skynyrd Lyve: The Vicious Cycle Tour”, which was then followed by a double CD release of the same name. 2004 brought the release of “Under The Influence,” a spectacular tribute with an all-star line up including Gov’t Mule, North Mississippi Allstars and Blues Traveler paying homage to the band by re-recording Skynyrd classics and new fan favorites. 2004 also brought the band the honor of the Florida Heroes Award by the Florida Chapter of NARAS as well as many invitations to perform for our Troops, which the band did with much pleasure. Lynyrd Skynyrd ended 2004 by joining forces with country rebels Montgomery Gentry for a rowdy episode of CMT’s hit series, “CMT Crossroads.”
