Loretta Lynn is often referred to as a “country music icon”; the fact is, that appellation sells her short. It doesn’t get at her envelope-pushing brilliance, her courage or her remarkable vitality. Here’s a more accurate description: great American artist. Period.

In a 2004 Rolling Stone feature, Jancee Dunn wrote that “Lynn expressed the concerns of everyday women with a directness that was at once revolutionary and unassuming,” while Rob Sheffield, in the same publication, celebrated her equally groundbreaking singing style, a style perfectly suited to her bold, real-life subject matter: “She’s always had the toughest, meanest, fiercest, warmest and sexiest voice in country music.”
