In the beginning of ’90 four annoyed young persons from Bakersfield, California, decided to set up a band, to get rid of their frustrations. Drummer David Silveria, bass player Reginald Arvizu (Fieldy) and guitarists James Shaffer (Munky) and Brian Welch (Head) grew up with hip-hop and death metal and decided to mix these influences with each other, as a result of which arose an entirely new sound. In the character of Jonathan Davis, a singer was found. Korn was complete.

The band started touring and the responses were praising. The unique sound and the tormented voice of Jonathan Davis meant a truth landslide within the considerably dozed off metal scene. After two years touring, among a concert on the notorious Ozzy Osbourne’s Ozzfest, Korn signed to Immortal (component of Sony) and their debut album appeared “Korn” (1994). Until now that album is still considered the best Korn-album because of the very thorough lyrics of Jon Davis. Thus he finishes “Daddy” whining because he sings about when he a little child who was abused sexually by his father.

One of the most important pillars of Korn’s success was the fan’s loyalty. In 1996 Korn tightened a lawsuit against the University of Michigan which suspended a student because he carried a Korn-shirt. They also did not have to think long when they heard that one of their fans was incurable sick. They went straight to the hospital and stayed for a couple of days in stead of the requested couple of minutes. They also wrote a song especially for him: “Justin”, that later on the album “Follow The Leader” was added. In the meantime the second album was, “Life Peachy” (1996), already sold a couple of millions records, especially thanks to their single A.D.I.D.A.S.(All Day I Dream About Sex) which was dedicated to their sponsor.

Korn - Take a Look in the Mirror (album cover)

Finally in 1998 Korn became worldwide known with their third album “Follow The Leader”. Up to that time Korn was still an absolutely unique band, however this would change rapidly. Within a short amount of time the charts was filled with Korn-clones that ensured that a separate name for the genre was even invented: “nu-metal”. It was also in that time that the band committed an unforgivable error: they ensured the opening of the band Limp Bizkit, who would become more popular then Korn. Of course more clones came to the scene insuring that Korn would be forgotten even more.

With “Issues” (1999) and ' Untouchables ' (2002) the quintet delivered two great albums. However the fans were not buying the albums. Especially ' Untouchables ' was found to be too commercial, what probably had to do with their ‘great’ 24-bits production. In the meantime nu-metal went more and more down the drain. Traditional metal bands such as Metallica and Machine Head returned to their roots and halfway 2003 nu-metal was almost dead.

To show that Korn still listens to their fans, they decided to do it this time entirely different. The sixth album “Take a look in The Mirror” was recorded in Korn's own studio and moreover the album was produced once more entirely by themselves. Now Korn sounds as exactly as raw in its beginning days, what especially is to hear in songs such as “Right Now”, “Break Some Off “ and “Let's do This Now”.

Korn did not make the fault, such as many other bands, to entirely return to their basis. This time Jonathan Davis continues experimenting which he started on “Untouchables”. This results in a couple of jewels, such as “Deep Inside” and “Everything I've Known”. To honor Metallica the band has added a cover of “One” as a bonus track which was recorded live during MTV Icons in 2003.

Many bands do not deliver six great albums in nine years time. Whether nu-metal is dead or not, the flag carriers have again proved themselves they can carry on for many years. Conclusion: if you stay true to your sound you will have the highest change of surviving.
