Atlanta, Georgia. Taking her stand as the Rap Queen of the South a/k/a The Only Successful Indie Female Rapper a/k/a The Real Baddest Chick a/k/a KHIA (pronounced K-eye-yah)—most known for her 2002 hit single, “My Neck, My Back (Lick It)” is back at it again with her highly anticipated album, NASTI MUZIK.
In January, KHIA signed to the independently made and independently paid Big Cat Records, who will be distributing KHIA’s Album through Tommy Boy Distribution. Big Cat Records is most known for their signing and development of Rap Artist, Gucci Mane (recently released to Atlantic Records). “We are extremely excited about KHIA’s forthcoming album”, states Mel Breeden, President of Big Cat Records. “KHIA is an established Artist who has proven that she has what it takes to show her fans that she’s here to stay”.
Working non-stop since the release of “My Neck, My Back (Lick It)”, KHIA’s fans have been getting small doses of what she has been up to this year. In April, KHIA made her 2008 debut on the VH-1 Reality Show, “Miss Rap Supreme” where she refused to be disrespected by the other contestants and hosts MC Serch and Yo-Yo.
This Spring, KHIA released her first mix tape of 2008 entitled, THE BOSS LADY hosted by the South’s infamous DJ Scream. Equipped with 15 gutta tracks and real hard lyrics, her mix tape includes a few new songs; a few songs off of her forthcoming album such as “What They Do” featuring Gucci Mane; and old classics such as “Snatch the Cat Back” from her previous album and mix tapes. “Khia’s been a hitmaker. This tape shows that she definitely still has it. The females will ride this one out from beginning to end. I can’t wait to hear the album”, says DJ Scream.
At the top of 2008, NASTI MUZIK promises to deliver fourteen (14) original tracks that her fans are anticipating. “On my album, I address all of my previous issues and beefs. This album will definitely project my growth as a Music Producer and Artist”, states KHIA.
This album is different from my other two albums because I’ve finally come into my own and I had a ball recording this album. I love my career and my album reflects that”, smiles KHIA. “I am blessed”. The skits heard on KHIA’s album are a reflection of her humorous side. As the skits show the comedic side of KHIA, she also takes stabs at females who have been delivering harsh lyrics directed towards her as well.
“I named my album NASTI MUZIK because I talk dirty while keeping it real at the same time. A lot of people have the same thoughts about life’s situations, but they don’t have the guts to speak the truth”, states KHIA.
Featuring Khia's straightforward attitude and no holds barred lyrical content, her latest effort is chock full of nasty tidbits, gritty raw beats, and Khia's knack for outrageous storytelling. On "Be Your Lady" Khia's rhymes about her latest male conquest leave nothing to the imagination: "We f#ck in the car / We f#ck in the house / I'll fix you breakfast butt naked while you eatin' me out." The scandalous lyrics are dropped over a derrty Southern beat with a head-nodding club flow. The second single, "What They Do" featuring Gucci Mane, is steeped in synth keyboards and hand claps that act as a background for Khia and Gucci's wild stories about nights in Atlanta's strip clubs. Khia rhymes, "Drop low to your knees / Boy whistle on it / Then put that wood on it / Come in like you paid for it." The album also features a series of skits, both musical and comedic, that confront Khia's haters and are sure to spark new rivalries. On each track Khia commands the listener's attention by being what she knows best; herself. Khia makes no attempt to fit into the mainstream mold or tone down her image to placate music execs or concerned parents. Instead, Khia is intent on an explicit musical revolution that is equal parts shocking and hilarious, all in the name of entertainment.
Born in Philadelphia and raised in Tampa, Florida, Khia now resides in Atlanta. Khia has been writing and singing rap, R&B and gospel her whole life. Her first brush with the hip-hop club scene began when she bartended at the trend setting club XS in Tampa. The bar was home to Wild 98.7 and served as the venue for the hottest local DJ and club shows. When Khia's mother passed away in 2000 from kidney failure, Khia used her grief as a catalyst to kick her music career into action. In 2002 Khia wrote, produced, and released her debut album Thug Misses. Distributed by Artemis Records, but with no major label contract deal, Khia found success on her own terms despite not having "Top 40" radio play or PR team to gain exposure for her album. The now infamous single, "My Neck, My Back," has sold 100,000 units to date and has been featured on numerous television shows and feature films. In 2005, she released her sophomore album Gangstress, which featured the single "Snatch the Cat Back." Khia has also been featured on the Janet Jackson's "So Excited" and Trick Daddy's "Jodd." Most recently Khia was featured on VH1's Miss Rap Supreme and had an ongoing column with Allhiphop.com. Nasti Muzik was produced by Khia, Marlon "Big Cat" Rowe and Melvin "Birdman" Breeden. The album will be released on August 19, 2008.
biography
KHIA (pronounced "KAI-yah") has become a female force in music to be reckoned with. “Who is KHIA?” you ask. Well...have you ever heard the song, “My Neck, My Back (Lick It)”? Oh please! Don’t act like you don’t know what song I’m talkin’ bout! I’m talkin’ bout the 2002 smash club single that gave every Bourgeoisie Bitch to the Hood Rats THE freedom to express herself in the club. When that song came on, every female in the club was either heading to the bar for another drink with one hand in the air or turning to the guy she came with that night to make sure he was listenin’ to the lyrics.
Born in Philadelphia and raised in Tampa, Florida, KHIA has been writing and singing Rap, R&B, and Gospel all her life. She danced Tap, African, and was a boisterous cheerleader. She performed at school, in talent shows, and parades. She never failed to use her home as a stage when all else failed. And to this very day, KHIA still breathes to entertain through music.
KHIA's hip-hop career sprouted with her ear to the pulse of club trends. She bartended in Tampa's pace-setting Club XS, home to Wild 98.7FM, and the perfect venue for exploring crowd-moving vibes. It didn't hurt that her friends were the top local DJs and producers, and for years she had been writing music for other groups. When KHIA's mother met an untimely death in 2000 from kidney failure, it was a wake-up call to focus on herself and present her own talents to the public.
In 2002, KHIA honed her verbal skills so carefully that the Thug Misses album flowed effortlessly. Her infamous single, “My Neck, My Back (Lick It)” was all over the country. Says KHIA of the album, "That album was dedicated to my Mom. I am seeing the rewards of her advice." KHIA’s first album was solely written and produced by her. Distributed by Artemis Records, Thug Misses set a huge example for females on the indie scene - one that has yet to be topped. "My Neck, My Back" was also sold and featured on the soundtrack for Fox TV’s “Dark Angel” show where other established artists such as Public Enemy, Q-Tip, MC Lyte, and Samantha Cole were also featured. Her single was also featured in films such as “The 40 Year Old Virgin” and “In The Deep” starring LL Cool J.
Passing her album to DJ’s, selling if from the trunk of cars, and getting it played through underground radio, KHIA was in demand with no video, no “Top 40” radio play, no promotion - just skills. And with the demand for good female hip-hop lyrics, KHIA didn’t stop at Thug Misses. In 2005, she released her sophomore album entitled, Gangstress, which featured her second hit single, “Snatch the Cat Back,” an elevated continuation of what her debut album had to offer.
During the Fall of 2006, KHIA was also featured on Music Legend, Janet Jackson’s album, 2O Y.O. The featured song, “So Excited,” was Jackson’s first single off of the milestone Virgin Records album. Trick Daddy’s album, Thug Matrimony also featured KHIA on his single, “Jodd”.
KHIA does more than hold her own, spitting confident lyrics for the sisters who demand full sexual satisfaction while lacing a body-snapping beat for everyone in the club and her third album entitled, Nasty Muzik via Big Cat Records/Tommy Boy Distribution will prove it. Released digitally a few weeks ago, her warm-up single, “What They Do” featuring Gucci Mane gives listeners a glimpse of KHIA’s growth as an artist and music producer. Her forthcoming single, “Be Your Lady” is impacting now. “This album will really show my musical maturity. I had fun with this album. It is artistically fun and creative” says KHIA of her upcoming release. “Each song has it’s own style and identity."
Despite the phenomenal success she’s had independently, KHIA is quick to note that she has what it takes get to the next level. She doesn't just stand around with her homies or rely on flashy dancers, sets, and costumes; KHIA brings her own style and passion for the spectacular, and truly leaves her heart on stage. Her albums are real and everyone can relate to her storytelling and empowering lyrics.
This spring, KHIA made her 2008 television debut on the VH-1 Reality Show, “Miss Rap Supreme” hosted by MC Serch and Female Rapper Yo-Yo.
KHIA is currently sharing her gift by writing for other artists and she has just completed her first novel and book of poems entitled, HOE (Heaven on Earth) that will also soon be released. AKA the Queen of the South, there is more to come from KHIA.
