KOCH Records is set to release Money’s My Motivation, the debut album from Oakland rapper Kafani on August 28th, 2007. The first single titled “Fast (Like a Nascar)” features Keak Da Sneak, and is already up to 450 spins and a club hit in the Bay area. Kafani is one half of the Oakland-based rap group Babyface Assassins, and has planted himself in California’s rap scene on his own, starting from the ground up.

Growing up in East Oakland, Kafani and his partner Kashmere built a thirteen-year long friendship that eventually developed into the business relationship they have now. This duo has collaborated with some of California’s foremost musical including Too $hort, Yukmouth, Choppa, Freeway, and Keak Da Sneak. Kafani stats, “Everyday is a struggle, but we strive to grow. Each day we get more fans because we work hard, we keep on grindin’.” With a recent radio campaign in the southwest United States, Kafani is developing a large and faithful fan base.

Kafani and Kashmere have gained major popularity with their song featuring Keak Da Sneak titled “Everybody Know My Name.” This collaborative track has been played on mix shows and in clubs across California, generating a buzz in the hip hop communities that hasn’t been seen for quite a long time.

    biography
After building a name for himself in the streets and with the music industry heavyweights in the Bay Area, Kafani was looking for a way to break through on a major level. The Oakland rapper thought he was onto something when realized he had some choice slang at his disposal. “‘Fassst’ was slang in the streets, but everybody didn’t know about it,” he says. “But it was the slang in East Oakland. My and my partners were always saying it, so I was like, ‘I’m going to do a song about that.’”

The resulting song, the propulsive hyphy “Fast (Like A Nascar),” and its alternate version featuring hyphy pioneer Keak Da Sneak, made Kafani the hottest rapper in the Bay Area. “When I made it,” he says, “I knew it was the one because if the streets already have a buzz on something and you put it to the masses, the masses follow the streets, so you’re good.”

The success of “Fast (Like A Nascar)” set the stage for Kafani’s national debut album, the highly anticipated Money’s My Motivation. The high-powered collection reflects Kafani’s desire to be successful and accumulate more than enough money to make himself comfortable. “At the end of the day, I’ve always been a hustler,” he explains. “We’re working, hustling, trying to get money and get what we want to get. I’m trying to provide for my family and my friends. The way to do that is money and money is power.”

Kafani’s powerful music will likely have him raking in the dough. “Move Fast With It,” a sensuous collaboration with Crime Mob’s Diamond, will be a rare strip club anthem from the West Coast, while “Money” features Kafani breaking down all the different names of currency around the world. He then gets confrontational on the anti-hater “What You Want To Do” and flexes a Southern-styled presentation on “Money Is My Motivation” and “Show Your Wrist Band.”

Underground hit “Hyphy Ill” features Kafani getting his thizz on, while he flexes his musical range on the slow, R&B flavored “Cutie Pie” and the seductive future club smash “Lean In It.”

A reason Kafani can connect with the ladies and the streets with equal aplomb is his roots in Oakland, which is world famous for its hustlers, pimps and players. Raised in such a vibrant yet potentially perilous environment, a young Kafani excelled at academics and athletics as he tried to figure a way to escape his ghetto surroundings.

By the time he was 10, Kafani (which means “destined to rule” in Swahili) was already holding down a paper route in an attempt to make money. The experience paid a lifetime full of dividends and instilled in him an envious work ethic.

“It taught me how to hustle and be a grinder,” he reveals. “I’m not the type of person that likes to ask anybody for anything. I like my own. I’ve always been a self-motivated person.”

So, when his stepbrother used Kafani’s connections to get some studio equipment and start recording songs, Kafani saw an opportunity to expand his entrepreneurial vision. He set out to start his own label and quickly started rapping and taught himself how to use the recording equipment, too.

With friend and partner-in-rhyme Kashmere “Kash,” Kafani started the Babyface Assassins clique and started building a buzz throughout Northern California. Most notably, he networked with Bay Area DJs and became known as “The Ice King” because of his knack for rocking memorable jewelry as he promoted himself at clubs, concerts and other gatherings.

By late 2005, Kafani had a hit on his hands with the Amp Live-produced “Everybody Know My Name,” which featured Keak Da Sneak. “That really got my buzz going to where people really knew who I was,” Kafani explains. “Ever since then, our name has been buzzing.”

A hyper stage show and subsequent hits “Hyphy Ill” and “Fast (Like A Nascar)” kept the buzz growing and have established Kafani as a bona fide hitmaker. With an album full of smash singles, Kafani is ready for superstardom with the impending release of Money’s My Motivation.

“I’m about being in the club, having fun and getting money,” he says. “That’s what I’m on.”

It’s what you’ll be on, too. We’ll put Money on it.
