All musicians have fantasies of becoming superstars, but few turn their dreams into a reality. What?s even more rare is reaching your goal while barely a teenager. Only a small number of people have done it?and succeeded. Noontime/Motown Records? newest recording artist?Corey?is next up for the challenge!
The 13-year-old singer?born Corey Jerome Hodges?was introduced to music at a very young age. "My mother taught me how to sing, and I learned to loved it," says Corey with a smile. "I was told that I was singing before I was walking!" Since he enjoyed music so much, Corey?s mother encouraged him to practice singing every day. His debut CD ? I?m Just Corey ? is proof that practice really does make perfect!
By age 10, Corey had the itch to entertain publicly and did so at the West End Mall in his Atlanta, Georgia hometown. While performing for shoppers, some music biz insiders overheard Corey singing and he soon landed a deal with the production company Noontime. From there, the vibrant youth signed with Motown Records. "It?s a dream come true," says the enthusiastic teen about joining the legendary label?s roster (Erykah Badu, Stevie Wonder, Brian McKnight).
I?m Just Corey showcases his vocal skills via fun and lively songs. The CD is a combination of modern R&B and hip-hop with a pop twist?making it a delight to listen to whether you?re young or old. Recorded in Atlanta and Florida, the album features writers and producers, Jazze Pha, B. Michael Cox, JQ, Donnie Scantz, T. Mitchell, Taritz and Corey himself. The young Hodges co-wrote the first single, "Hush Little Lady," featuring rapper Lil Romeo.
INTERVIEW
Q: What was being in the studio for the first time like for you?
C: I would get frustrated. I cried when I couldn?t get things right, cause I want people to like it, but Ryan (CEO of Noontime Recordings (Usher, Jagged Edge, Toni Braxton)) would just come in the booth and tell me to stay calm and sing from my heart. That always works.
Q: How did you feel when you first heard yourself on CD?
C: When I first heard myself on CD, I was like, "Oh my God! That?s really me!"
