ILL NIÑO’s Latin roots run bloody and deep. As innovative and refreshing as their sound is, they’re nearly impossible to describe: Spanish lyrics, flamenco guitars, tribal drums and percussion, Salsa-infused bass lines, and thunderous metal riffs. ILL NIÑO brings all of those qualities together masterfully and are very much in evidence on THE UNDER COVER SESSIONS, the bi-lingual Latino Metal sextet’s first recording for Cement Shoes Records, the new rock label distributed by FONTANA/Universal. The five-song EP contains three covers of their favorite songs from acts they loved growing up as fans – Faith No More (“Zombie Eaters”), Nirvana (“Territorial Pissings”) and Peter Gabriel (“Red Rain) – plus two brand new songs (“Arrastra” and “Reservation for Two”), all overseen by legendary producer Andy Johns (Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Ozzy Osbourne), Dave Chavarri and Eddie Wohl (Anthrax, 36 Crazyfists, Machine Head). The EP is just a taste of what’s to come from ILL NIÑO, as their highly anticipated fourth full-length studio album, due for a Spring 2007 delivery, is destined to be the band’s most influential release to date.
New Jersey/New York born ILL NIÑO formed in late 1999 and became the epitome of Latin Metal in 2001 with their monster debut album, Revolution, Revolución. Strong airplay for their first single “What Comes Around” and slots on both Ozzfest and Jagermeister tours in 2002 helped the album sell nearly 410,000 worldwide.
In 2003 ILL NIÑO returned with their sophomore release Confession and managed to surpass their debut sales, selling over 500,000 copies worldwide. The success of Confession also spawned the hit single “How Can I Live,” the featured single on the Freddy vs. Jason soundtrack and film. The sextet’s relentless touring with the likes of Godsmack, Sevendust, Korn, and Linkin Park established ILL NIÑO as one of the most lethal live bands of the decade.
Awaiting the arrival of “One Nation Underground” (2005), and equipped with the highly acclaimed single “What You Deserve,” ILL NIÑO landed No. 1 Most Added track at Active Rock radio, four weeks prior to the album’s release! In support of “What you Deserve” and in typical ILL NIÑO fashion, the band set out on a yearlong world tour, which included U.S. treks with Disturbed and Static X, as well as European festivals with Guns & Roses and Avenged Sevenfold.
The result of Latin hybrid ILL NIÑO, is the sound of a band which has grown album by album; a bilingual band that has discovered the perfect blend between Hispanic flavors and Metal styles.
In the last six years, Latin music and artists have continued to grow and break new ground. ILL NIÑO has Revolutionized metal, Confessed its sins through its lyrics, and has managed to make a mark in the Underground. ILL NIÑO is not just a great Latin metal band, but a great band, period.
