Doing more with less, Hammer No More The Fingers is a 3 piece from Durham/Chapel Hill, NC. In 1994 they were a collective of 10 year olds playing all original music except for an Archers of Loaf cover. The Pixies, Chili Peppers, TMBG, and God forbid, Nirvana probably formed the mold. So you could shoehorn them into an early 90's indie revival type thing, but it's a little like putting a squid in a sweater.
Hammer No More The Fingers' sound is luxuriously full for a 3 piece. They write catchy, edgy, slightly off-kilter rock music and their live show is powerful and reckless, yet somehow tasteful and refined. Searing, mellow, crunchy, they do brain surgery and tree removal with the same butter knife, producing a small-club-arena-rock, happy-from-the-inside, soul jam. While Joe Hall (guitar, harmony) was finishing up at UNC, Duncan Webster (bass, vocals) spent his time in NYC soaking up the music scene. His 3 piece band, Mumu Worthy, opened for Patti Smith's annual New Year's Eve stand at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC.
He also got to see Flea's elephant tattoo up close when he played alongside him and Patti at the Hullabaloo Festival in LA. Patti graciously took him under her wing, and has been an incredible mentor and inspiration; Flea made him an omelette. In December 2006, long time friend Jeff "Stick" Stickley came on board with his drum kit -- and Hammer No More The Fingers was born. Hammer No More The Fingers is committed to remaining light on their feet, flexible, and ready for anything.
press quotes
From Grayson Currin of the Independent Weekly:
"Young but lifelong Durhamites, Hammer No More the Fingers borrow from Merge bands back when the label had its home on the other end of U.S. 15-501 (some Superchunk, maybe a little of Polvo's sinews). They braid it with a laid-back, groove-born feel, though, as post-Sublime as it is Grateful Dead."
From Grayson Currin of the Independent Weekly:
"Hammer No More the Fingers grip indie rock icons with young fists . . ."
