In true DIY fashion, underground classics Half-Cocked and Radiation are being released as a double DVD via filmmakers Michael Galinsky and Suki Hawley’s RUMUR imprint.
Shot on 16mm black and white film in 1994 in Louisville, Nashville and Chattanooga, Half-Cocked follows a group of kids who steal a van full of music equipment and pretend to be a band in order to stay on the road. The film documents the fertile southern underground rock scene in the mid 90’s. When the film was completed the filmmakers took the film on the road, showing it in rock clubs around the world from Berlin to Taipei.
While touring with Half-Cocked , Hawley and Galinsky shot their follow up film, Radiation, in Spain. It follows a Spanish rock promoter who takes American bands on tour. When he screws everything up and the band takes off, he is forced to improvise to save his business. Radiation premiered at The Sundance Film Festival in 1999 and went on to screen at over 40 international festivals. However, this will be the first time it is commercially available. Featuring cameos by acts like Stereolab, Will Oldham, and Boston’s Come, the film was hailed by music and film critics for its accurate portrayal of life on the road.
The DVD will see commercial release in February and in addition to the two films will feature bonus materials, including a making-of short about Half-Cocked and Radiation, music videos, slideshows (with over 400 photos), and over two hours of extra music.
