HalfDown Thomas: A name that sounds strange and immediately identifiable at the same time. Different yet same ... that pretty much sums up the idea behind this Band. Started in 1999 in the little North Alabama town of Cullman, HalfDown Thomas (or HDT) began as a project created by guitarist Wesley Smith, drummer Josh Wilbanks, and bassist George White who had been playing together for the last 6 years in the various incarnations of the garage band Aeseye. The decision was made to make something more out of the situation, so auditions were held and singer Randy Ayers was taken onboard. The chemistry was instant, and within 4 months HDT found themselves in the studio recording their first 5 song EP.
Since then HalfDown Thomas has managed to accumulate quite a list of recording accomplishments. Two EP's, Two full length disc's (2000s self titled "HalfDown Thomas" and 2003s "Momentum"), inclusion in numerous compilations and garnering a spot on the Brother Cane tribute album The Road with their rendition of "Kerosene."
Live performance is an area where HDT excels as well. Within 8 months of its inception, HalfDown Thomas had managed to struggle their way to the top of the notoriously competitive local Birmingham original music scene. Since then HDT has been lucky enough to share billing with the best local bands (such as the Suburban Love Junkies, Six, Adelayda, Lynam, Cloud 10, Blue Epic, Leaderdog) as well as some of the best regional and national acts to come to this area (Fuel, Hot Action Cop, The Rugs, Kings of Leon, Rocky George of Suicidal Tendencies, Dave Anderson of Brother Cane) on stages from Air Force bases in Texas to the prestigious Budweiser stage at Charlotte's world famous Speed Street/600 Festival. With the local Birmingham scene as a firm foundation, HDT is on the move...
In the summer of 2004 HDT won a competitive 3 round battle of the bands to become Alabama's lone official representative in the "Imprint Records Search for the Next Rock Star". HalfDown Thomas then traveled to Gulport, MS, to compete in the finals and ultimately finished a strong second place (missing out by a mere 2 points!) out of the best 11 bands chosen from throughout the southeast to compete.
With the release of their latest full length disc, "Momentum," HDT is looking to take this project to the next level. In the next stage of their evolution, HalfDown Thomas has set their sights on the Southeast in general. The plan is to take their "Southern Rock meets Modern Alternative" sound to the regional level and establish themselves as a household name on a larger scale.
And this is where the story stands now......
Oh, and the name? Well, the members of HalfDown Thomas have yet to divulge the true meaning of the phrase, but it never hurts to ask.....
