After 40 years in obscurity, The Funk Brothers are finally receiving their due, with the award-winning feature documentary Standing In The Shadows Of Motown, two 2003 Grammys and a 2004 Lifetime Achievement Grammy.

Now, for the first time, Motown’s stellar house band’s original instrumental performances, including their funky versions of hits made famous by the Four Tops, Temptations, Supremes, Marvin Gaye and others, have been brought together on CD: The Best Of The Funk Brothers (Motown/UMe) edition of 20th Century Masters/The Millennium Collection, released February 3, 2004, just a few days before they receive their Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Compiled from two rare never-on-CD albums and even rarer singles from the ’60s and ’70s, each originally issued under leader/keyboardist Earl Van Dyke’s name, most of the digitally remastered tracks on The Best Of The Funk Brothers make their CD debuts. Featured, with Funk Bros. solos over their original, familiar backing tracks, are hip instrumental versions of “The Way You Do The Things You Do,” “Come See About Me,” “Too Many Fish In The Sea” and “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You),” each from 1965’s That Motown Sound, which also included the U.K. hit single “All For You.” From the same era are the rare, non-LP singles: “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)”; “6 By 6,”by ‘Earl Van Dyke & The Motown Brass,” a nod to the popularity of Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass; and “Soul Stomp,” the song that made them underground stars in the U.K., a scenario played out in the film Standing In The Shadows Of Motown. Another rare non-LP, ‘Earl Van Dyke’ single is “Runaway Child, Running Wild,” from 1969. “The Stingray,” today a classic hip-hop/breakbeat jam, hails from Earl’s 1970 live LP, The Earl Of Funk.

Rounding out the Funk Brothers’ extraordinary run at Motown’s Hitsville U.S.A. studios are two ’70s instrumentals: an awesome, previously unreleased instrumental mix of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On,” and the rare B-side, “Papa Was A Rolling Stone (instrumental),” originally issued as the flip of The Temptations’ #1 hit. It won a Grammy® for Best R&B Instrumental Performance.

The Funk Brothers played on more #1 records than The Beatles, Beach Boys, Rolling Stones and Elvis Presley combined. Yet they remained out of the spotlight until 2002’s Standing In The Shadows Of Motown reunited the surviving Funk Brothers in Detroit to tell their story and play their music more than 40 years after recording their first note for Motown.

Joe Hunter and Johnny Griffith on keyboards, Joe Messina and Eddie Willis on guitar, Bob Babbitt on bass, Jack Ashford on percussion/vibraphone, and Richard “Pistol” Allen and Uriel Jones on drums were joined in spirit by those who had earlier passed away – Van Dyke, bassist James Jamerson (Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee in 2000), guitarist Robert White, percussionist Eddie Brown and drummer Benny Benjamin (Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee in 2003). (Griffith and Allen have since died). The film won Best Documentary honors from the National Society of Film Critics and New York Film Critics Circle. The soundtrack album won Grammys for Best Compilation Soundtrack and Best Traditional R&B Performance.

The series 20th Century Masters/The Millennium Collection, featuring new “best of” albums from the most significant music artists of the past century, is the most successful single artist series in music history.
