TOGETHER AS ONE--the debut album from emerging reggae vocalist and songwriter ELAN--is a unique combination of the young singer-songwriter's musical influences which are heavy on the island sounds and rhythms, but also incorporate elements of classic American R&B and soul; Feli Kuti-inspired African rhythms; and even '80s new wave pop like Depeche Mode and the Cure. For his album due out May 9 on Kingsbury Studios/Interscope Records, ELAN worked with some of the biggest and best reggae producers in the business. Executive produced by No Doubt’s Tony Kanal (Kingsbury Studios is Kanal’s imprint), it features some of the most amazing musicians and producers in Jamaican reggae culture including Sly & Robbie, Fatis, Steve “Lenky” Marsden, Tony Kelly and DJ legend Cutty Ranks, in addition to Kanal producing several tracks himself.
Prior to signing with Kingsbury Studios/Interscope, ELAN served as the front man for the legendary Wailers from 1997-1999. Around the globe and back again, he performed the catalogue of Bob Marley classics with impressive respect, talent and purity. Opening for Carlos Santana and India Arie along the way, ELAN gained fans from one city to the next. As a solo artist, ELAN’s track “Dreams Come True” can be found on the Sex in the City album and he recorded a song with Gwen Stefani for the 50 First Dates soundtrack.

TOGETHER AS ONE showcases ELAN’s philosophical duality, with songs that jump back and forth between strong spirituality or socio-political concerns as well as matters of the heart and libido--the difference between the sacred and the profane. It's the difference between "I Wanna Yell," which he wrote about economic and other injustices he saw firsthand traveling the world, and "Feel My Pressure," which is all about getting freaky with the opposite sex. When ELAN discusses the album's title track, he explains that being bound together as one is meant spiritually, politically and sexually.
The sexual motif is driven home brilliantly and sometimes comically by guest artists on three of the album's tracks. The legendary Cutty Ranks brings an old school DJ/toaster vibe to "You Don't Come Around No More." Assassin, a rising star and DJ in Jamaica, brings the new school vibe to "Girl." And Tami Chynn, also currently huge on the Caribbean island, half-sings, half-DJs on yet another pick-up anthem, "Don't You Go."
TOGETHER AS ONE will be preceded by the March 14 release of a sampler package with the songs “Girl” featuring Assassin, “Nothing Is Worth Losing You” and “Together As One.” Look for ELAN to perform these songs and others when he sets off March 24 on a national tour as the support act for UB40. ELAN is also looking forward to working with clothing brand Op on its 2006 marketing and branding campaign, which is slated to include his image and music, reflecting his style and West Coast roots.
Biography
Born in the unlikely reggae breeding ground of Los Angeles, California, Elan developed a deep love for rhythm and melody at an early age. But it wasn’t until he teamed up with legendary Wailers guitarist Al Anderson on his demo that Elan’s musical journey began. Impressed with Elan’s style and vocal range, Al recruited him to be the Wailers front-man. It was an offer he couldn’t refuse.
Still a musical newcomer, Elan set out on a world tour with Bob Marley’s band for more than three years. Around the globe and back again, he performed the catalogue of Marley classics with impressive respect, talent and purity. Opening for Carlos Santana and India Arie along the way, Elan gained fans from one city to the next.
As a solo artist, Elan’s track “Dreams Come True” can be found on the Sex in the City album, and he recorded a song (with Gwen Stefani) for the 50 First Dates soundtrack.
Elan is currently recording his debut album with some of the biggest and best reggae producers in the business. The notable list includes heavyweights such as Sly and Robbie, Lenky, Salaam Remi and Tony Kelly to name a few. In addition to producing several tracks, Tony Kanal of No Doubt is serving as Executive Producer on the project. Elan’s debut album will be released on Interscope Records in 2005 and promises to showcase to the world his rare talent and enthusiasm.
