DAVID MOORE’s incarnation as a solo artist might sound reminiscent of soulful troubadours like Ray LaMontagne, Jakob Dylan and Ryan Adams. It’s an interesting musical progression for the former Split Lip and Chamberlain frontman who comes to New York City Wednesday, June 11 for a special engagement at the Mercury Lounge to unveil material off of his debut solo album My Lover, My Stranger, due out later this year.

The Indiana-based singer-songwriter has endured what has become somewhat typical for many lifelong musicians in his former bands: changing band members, evolution of sound, clashing egos and loss of focus. In 2001, David Moore pulled into the parking lot of an Indianapolis guitar shop where he unloaded his Gretsch guitar, his Fender combo amp and some various assets belonging to his longtime band, indie-rock stalwarts, Chamberlain. After a decade of touring the country and parts of the world, Moore had called it quits. He had decided to cleanse himself from his past by selling off everything, at whatever bargain he could secure.

Luckily the break from Chamberlain came with friendships intact, and it was a collective appreciation for life’s bigger picture that brought Moore and former bandmate Adam Rubenstein together in 2005 to begin working on Moore’s solo endeavor. Contributing to this reinvigoration was Moore’s father, who saw his old Gretsch guitar hanging in that same guitar shop window, and repurchased it for his son years later. A sign that fate was to intervene.

However, whereas they were satisfied with the songwriting, the new recordings never felt quite fully realized enough. The two wrestled with writers block and self-doubt for a couple years until the spring of 2007, when a chance encounter occurred. Moore was on a business trip layover at the Atlanta airport when he was approached by a casual acquaintance, John David Webster, a producer and musician from Indiana, who had seen Moore and Rubenstein perform that previous summer. The two became fast friends when to Moore’s surprise Webster revealed his home and studio were just a few short blocks away in the very same neighborhood.

Along with Adam Rubenstein, Moore and Webster as producer completed My Lover, My Stranger in 2008. It is a lush musical departure for Moore and the songs sound full of optimism and rejuvenation. From the opening inspired anthem “Breaking You Down,” to the spiritually infused war cry “Jericho,” to the rhythmically rich love song “Corners,” My Lover, My Stranger seldom lets up. Moore’s vocals sound wise and weathered throughout and the music takes on more melodic chances than ever before in his career. David Moore is sure to open some ears and some eyes as well.
