“F**k that. That sounds stupid. We're still breaking up," described Bright Light Fever vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist Evan Ferro of his reaction when word broke that Stolen Transmission Records wanted to sign his band. “I thought I was getting punk'd.” For the members of the band, the luck of getting a record deal wasn’t immediately welcomed with open arms. After a few years of making a name for themselves in their hometown of Placerville, California, Bright Light Fever were on the verge of breaking up. Sensing this, Evan did double duty by doing vocals in his brother Matt’s band Supermodel Suicide as well. He was mere minutes away from quitting his former band and jumping into this band full time when the phone rang in late 2005.
Stolen Transmission came calling after loving demos that had been written as Bright Light Fever years before. But the label didn’t want Supermodel Suicide… They wanted Bright Light Fever.
Hiring a local drummer by the name of Robert Torres to fill in the spot that their earlier drummer had vacated, Evan had a decision to make. Should he choose to be in the band he had been currently fronting with his brother or should he restart Bright Light Fever with his best friend and co-founding member, bassist Dan Suave? Luckily for Evan, he chose the latter. “It was hard for me, as well as everybody else. I pretty much had to choose between being with my best friend in one band or being with my older brother in the other. That was a chance I didn't want to let go of, so we decided to bring them both together.”
With the current line-up a combination of both bands cementing to a rock solid foundation, Bright Light Fever was reborn. “We sort of formed an ultra-mega band that showcased the best elements of both,” laughs guitarist/vocalist Matt, who along with Robert quit Supermodel Suicide to join Evan.
Holing themselves up at The Hanger Studios in Sacramento during the winter of 2005, they enlisted the help of none other than Joby Ford (The Bronx) who took over production while Robert Cheek (Rx Bandits, An Angle) engineered. “I honestly don't think the album would be what it is if it wasn't for Joby,” explains Evan. “I truly think of him as a member of the Bright Light Fever family.”
From the whiny guitars of “Good Day Good Day” to the swirly rock of “Papa’s Got a Brand New Liver”, to the bluesy, smoke-drenched piano ballad “Crowded Street in May”, to the slash and burn guitars of “A Deeper Blue”, The Evening Owl is an album rife with textures and rhythms, a real rock album for those who want to rock. “If you listen to our album, there is a steady thread of darkness, and moodiness,” says guitarist/vocalist Matt Ferro. “It’s a little creepy without being totally f**kin' scary and evil. It made us think of animals that were the same way… and an owl came to be the best representation. We love movies and TV like Twilight Zone, Hitchcock...anything old and creepy. Our dad used to call the old Hitchcock TV series 'The Evening Hour'..... We wanted to present the album in the same way an old TV show would be but twisted a little...hence Bright Light Fever Presents… The Evening Owl.”
As the band looks forward to the release of their album at the tail end of 2006, Bright Light Fever isn’t planning on breaking up any time soon. Says Evan of the future, “I hope we’re all still playing and writing music, and in five years, I hope it’ll be our job to do just that... and as Bright Light Fever."
