Bitch 'Make This/Break This' album

Kill Rock Stars is proud to present Bitch’s powerful debut CD entitled Make This/Break This, due out in October 2006. Armed with an electric violin, a ukulele and a bass guitar, Bitch (formerly of Bitch and Animal) is on a rampage (& will be on the road with her touring band, The Exciting Conclusion) with a fistful of songs that are politically charged, pop-culture shaking with personally wrenching lyrics, atypical instrumentation, minimalist sound and wildly dramatic stage persona. Make This/Break This was produced by June Millington and three-time Grammy nominee Roma Baran (Laurie Anderson.)

Bitch is a dream publishers-profile-style triple threat. As perfect-timing would have it, her acting debut is hitting the nations’ theatres in conjunction with the release date of her debut CD. Already raking in rave reviews at Cannes, and making a name in the USA’s trades and trends columns, Bitch’s performance in John Cameron Mitchell’s (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) newest feature film, Shortbus, is a testament to the breadth and depth of her variety of talents and increasing profile in America’s pop culture landscape. She can also currently be seen in the Bright Eyes video “First Day of My Life.”

Interesting, intelligent, provocative and prolific, Bitch offers up a new, genuine and potent voice in the current soundscape. Blending influences as wide as her vocabulary, her opinions and her closet, her music is reminiscent but never derivative of her folk, hip-hop, rap and rockabilly influences. Bitch is successfully following her vision of making music that is symphonic, beat worthy, break your heart ballad-y, and raise the roof revolutionary. Incorporating theatrics and armed with her multi-facetted talents, expert musicianship and intrinsic stand-out sense of style, and overall bold and unforgettable persona, Bitch is the embodiment of the Modern, DIY aesthetic and IT factor.

Recorded over the course of two years in her home studio in NYC, Make This/Break This was engineered by Wayne Schrengohst. Upon completing the record, Bitch played a sold-out 5-week residency in NYC, which landed her on the cover of two magazines, Go! and Velvet Park. She has also been featured in The LA Times, Spin, The New Yorker, Playboy, Time Out, Village Voice, The Advocate, I-D, and many other publications. A collection of songs from Make This/Break This has already been featured on Showtime’s breakout hit, “The L Word.”

Known for her breathtaking onstage performances, she has brought audiences to their feet worldwide; touring all over the world, catching the eyes and ears of a slew of notable musicians and fans. She has shared stages with such varied artists as Karen Finley, Le Tigre, Michelle Shocked, Alan Cumming, Jill Sobule, Pink, Kelly Osborne, Utah Phillips, Tegan and Sara, Toshi Reagon, Neko Case, Yo La Tengo, John Cameron Mitchell, The Indigo Girls, Ani DiFranco, Murray Hill, Ferron, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Erase Errata, Nina Hagen, Justin Bond, Andy Bell of Erasure, Sandra Bernhard, and Lea DeLaria. She has played prestigious festivals such as the Vancouver Folk Festival, High Sierra Festival, Hillside Festival and the Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival. The Indigo Girls will take Bitch and her supporting band, The Exciting Conclusion on their fall record release tour.

Her former band, Bitch and Animal, released three albums together. Their first album, What's that Smell?, was released on their own label, and quickly caught the ear of Ani DiFranco. DiFranco raved to the national press that she was “drawn to their energy, their humor, their rawness. They’re just straight up, real, fearless performers.” Ani co-produced and released their second album, Eternally Hard, on her own Righteous Babe Records. Robert Hilburn of the LA Times voted it one of the top ten albums of the year in 2001 and said, “a radical duo that plays blasphemous songs that up-end gender stereotypes and preach acceptance.” Their third album, Sour Juice and Rhyme (also on RBR), was nominated for album of the year by the GLAAD Media awards, along with Rufus Wainwright, Peaches, and Me'shell Ndegeocello.

Bitch is a classically educated actress and violinist. Trained in violin since the age of four, she studied with such master teachers as James Waring, Andrew Bird and Morris Hochberg. Bitch also graduated with a BFA in Performance from the Goodman School of Drama at DePaul University in Chicago, where she was already turning heads and making waves with her firebrand feminist interpretation of Shakespeare’s Juliet. Bottom line, Bitch doesn’t back down from her radical politics, but is famous for expressing them with positivity, acceptance, and affirmation. As the artist behind it continues to break the mold, Make This/Break This is sure to break ground.
