Formed in NYC in 2000, and named after a garbled wording of everyone's favorite red and white American beer, Bad Wizard cranks out a brand of hard-swigging rock and roll that can knock you to the floor, then make you get up and yell for more.
The members of Bad Wizard are a combination of North and South; front man Curtis Brown and bassist Kurt Midness hail from North Carolina (and at one time coached a little league team together in Georgia), while guitarists Tina Gorin and Eddie Lynch are native Long Islanders. The resulting sound and spirit of the band is a righteous blend of Southern-fried boogie and true New York grit. Drummer John Sherman comes from Portland, Oregon and adds his own mix of power and precision to the brew.
After tearing up the asphalt across North America for the last several years, and playing every imaginable type of gig from the dive-iest biker bar to the Kentucky Derby, Bad Wizard earned the reputation as one of the fiercest live acts in the land. In 2005 they were invited to play the ATP festival in Camber Sands, England, where they were received so well by the audience that they were asked to play an unheard of second slot at the festival, and then open for Slint the following night at London’s Forum theatre.
Upon their return to the States, the band traveled to the LA studio of Jennifer Herrema (Royal Trux, RTX) and began work on their next record. Herrema’s production brings out sides of Bad Wizard no one has heard before, creating a trippier and more expansive sound. Old fans need not worry, however, as the new songs contain all the furious, foot-stomping fire power that the band is famous for.
Sky High, Bad Wizard’s fourth full-length CD, comes out Feb 21st on Howler Records.
